Conservative MPs Try to scupper the Green Deal

It has become apparent that a dissenting portion of the Conservative party are trying to put a spanner in the works of the Green Deal Scheme.

The problem is that the MPs are sceptical about the fact that any person wishing to extend or improve their home would be required to undetake Green Deal measures to make sure their properties are energy efficient before other improvements are made.

The fight comes just before the queens speech which will include 3 different energy related measures which the Green Deal is expected to be one.

Greg Barker has put in place some new measures to make it simpler for smaller companies to become Green Deal providers.

The red tape cutting move will see the removal of the neccesity for firms to have insurance against insolvency. Also measures are there to bring down the costs involved should there be any customer disputes along with this he has made a promise to alter the warranties on green deal equipment to make sure the customer is getting value for money.

The changes have come as result of a green deal scheme government consulatation to work through worries that smaller firms may be squeezed out of the Green Deal market.

This week Greg Barker spoke with the British Property Federation this week.

Barker announced that through the Green Deal this coalition government would be the greenest government in history and energy efficiency would be at the very heart of this pledge.

He went on to add that the framework for the Green Deal is the governments way of helping home owners, landlords and tenants to get vital home improvements such as insulation, double glazing and new boilers without the up front costs.

He explained that this would bring communities together to embrace the green deal and that it is a new exciting method of energy efficiency, helping to create a new market place.

Barker said that the UK has some of the least energy efficient properties in Europe with over 40% of all UK emissions came from housing. He explained that most houses are leaking heat like a sieve through inadequate insulation and with rising fuel prices, it is estimated over 4 million people will be living in fuel poverty this year. The green deal aims to address this.

The green deal is being heralded as the modern way to tackle these problems. It puts us, the homeowners, at the centre of the scheme. It will be down to homeowners  to drive demand and create a competitive market place.

The green deal will have consumer protection at its heart and will enable everybody to make all the expensive home improvements that were otherwise out of reach.

The green deal has at its heart energy efficiency, but the second prong is economic growth. It is said that by 2015 sixty five thousand jobs will be supported by the green deal. At this point green deal is on the statute books and awaiting secondary legislation, so more news will be imminent.

The latest noise from the Green Deal is that homeowners and landlords taking up the Green Deal Scheme will be in line for a £150 cash incentive to sweeten the deal.

It appears there is a bit of panic within the government that the scheme will be met with apathy by home owners and landlords and in response it looks like the first in will be getting cash incentives, there has also been whispers that tax and council tax rebates will be on offer for early adopters.

As you can imagine, as of today the information regarding this scheme is limited, but please rest assured that we will keep you updated as more news becomes available.
